Otaquest Live had its second year in Downtown Los Angeles, just up the street from Anime Expo. With talented headliners m-flo and the dance/electronic group CAPSULE (singer Toshiko Koshijima and DJ Yasutaka Nakata), and fan favorite Kyary Pamyu Pamyu it proved to be a major attraction of day zero at AX 2019.

With lively performances from groups such as Hiromi Tosaka, Otaquest managed to keep momentum with fun and exciting performances that kept the energy level high. The visual experience was a mixture of electronic eye candy and a psychedelic trip, all set to the beat of the music.  Above all, what made the show an incredible experience to be at was the connection of bands with the audience.  The crowd was ecstatic to be in the presence of bands they loved and couldn’t see anywhere else in America. The audience engagement was was so intense that people didn’t flock to the bar for drinks, but rather the concert floor because they wanted to be as close as possible to their personal idols from the Far East.

That was where the overwhelming joy of Otaquest came from.

If not already fans, the entire room developed a genuine connection to the performances on the stage. When m-flo showcased a new song the crowd exploded with enthusiasm, and when they said goodnight to the audience it seemed like a sorrowful departure of a dear friend.

Otaquest 2019 was in a word authentic, and that authenticity was repaid with passion from the crowd.
